The Keelung Museum of Art presents WE ARE ME — We Never Just Pass By, opening on October 30, 2025, an annual international exhibition curated by FAMEME (Yu Cheng-Ta)—the virtual persona of the Taiwanese artist. Bringing together 10 artists from the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Thailand, and Taiwan, the exhibition features 29 works, including new commissions and landmark pieces that probe how digital systems shape the ways we see, are seen, and construct ourselves.
WE ARE ME explores how identity, perception, and visibility are reshaped in the algorithmic age. In the era of social media feeds, viewing has become inseparable from performing; every act of seeing is simultaneously an act of being seen. The exhibition considers this new condition of visibility—how the self is continuously produced, multiplied, and refracted within the collective gaze. The title evokes both the tension and symbiosis between “WE” and “ME,” while the subtitle "We Never Just Pass By" reflects the contemporary impulse to leave a trace, a digital proof of existence where witnessing itself becomes a performative act.
The exhibition features several artists showing in Taiwan for the first time, alongside newly commissioned works created especially for this presentation.Making his debut in a Taiwanese museum, Ryan Gander (UK)—a leading figure in contemporary conceptual art and a regular at the Venice Biennale, documenta, and the Sydney Biennale—presents Is Empathy a Superpower? (2025), a monumental black balloon that poses a disarmingly simple question, inviting viewers to confront innocence as inquiry. Camille Henrot (France), Silver Lion winner at the 55th Venice Biennale, introduces her seminal video Grosse Fatigue (2013) and a selection of related works that trace her investigation into systems of emotion and control.
From Thailand, Nawin Nuthong brings 4–6 Child on the Note (8 pieces) (2025), merging the imagery of Taiwan’s currency and Keelung’s temple culture into a playful critique of power and belief. Japanese artist yang02 reveals the hidden labor behind exhibitions with Installation in Progress (2022) and slows down our perception of progress in Slow Mini 4DW — Escape from Modern Values (2025). Shota Yamauchi (Japan) contributes Being… Us? (2025), where AI-generated shadows blur the distinction between human and posthuman forms.
From Taiwan, Hsien-Yu Cheng’s It Could Be You (2022) questions algorithmic identity; Agi Chen’s Roaming in United-Islands (2025) transforms anime color palettes into collective memory; Yu-Cheng Hsieh’s immersive light installations Cyclorama (2023) and Rainfall (2025) probe perception and illusion; Sung-Chih Chen’s Untitled–KEE (2025) turns footprints into temporal traces; and Mei-Chi Wu’s Baby’s Baby II (2025) layers photography and objects into an intimate meditation on time and presence.
The exhibition key visual is designed by renowned Taiwanese designer Aaron Nieh. The imagery depicts a crowd staring at a blank wall, symbolizing how “watching” itself has become a performance, while reflecting the audience’s condition upon entering the exhibition: are they focusing on the art, or on the reflection of themselves through art? A set of postcard editions has also been created for visitors to collect during the exhibition, serving as a tangible extension of the show that carries a record of their experience.
